BA Music (Songwriting and Performance)
About this course
Songwriting and performance is a discipline that sits at the heart of the music industry, asking how songs are crafted, developed, and brought to life in performance. Songwriting is both an art and a craft: it requires melodic instincts and lyrical imagination, but also structural understanding, harmonic knowledge, and the ability to edit and refine ideas until they do what you want them to do. Performance adds another layer, asking how a songwriter presents their work, communicates with an audience, and develops a compelling stage presence and artistic identity. The two are deeply interconnected for singer-songwriters who both write and perform their own material. At the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, one of the UK's most distinctive and music-industry-connected performance schools, this three-year full-time programme is designed specifically for musicians who want to pursue careers as singer-songwriters, as songwriters who front bands, or as professional songwriters writing for other artists. You will develop your songwriting across a range of commercial and artistic contexts, refining your craft through practice, feedback, and collaboration. You will also develop your performance skills, building the stage presence and professional tools that a performing career demands. The Liverpool music scene, and LIPA's deep connections to the industry, provide an exceptionally rich environment for this kind of study. Graduates from this programme pursue careers as recording artists, performing songwriters, session musicians, and professional songwriters writing for other artists and for television, advertising, and sync licensing. Others move into music production, artist management, music publishing, and A&R. The industry is competitive and diverse, and LIPA's profile and industry connections provide a strong platform from which to launch a professional career in music.
