BA Multimedia Journalism
About this course
Multimedia journalism is journalism adapted to the reality of contemporary media production, in which stories are told not in a single medium but across text, audio, video, and digital platforms simultaneously. The journalist of today needs to be able to report a story, write it up, record a radio package, shoot and edit video, and publish across multiple online channels, often within the same working day. Multimedia journalism training develops all of these skills alongside the core journalistic capacities of news judgement, source development, accuracy, and ethical awareness. At the University of Northampton, this three-year full-time programme combines practical training across radio, television, newspaper, magazine, and online journalism with the academic study of media, journalism practice, and the social and political context in which journalism operates. You will develop technical skills in audio and video production, digital publishing, and social media alongside the investigative and writing skills that all journalism requires. The programme reflects the multidisciplinary nature of modern news organisations, where boundaries between platforms have largely collapsed, and it prepares you to work flexibly across whichever formats your future employer needs. The academic dimension of the programme ensures you understand not just how to produce journalism but why it matters, what its obligations are, and how it relates to democracy, public life, and the media industry as a whole. Graduates from multimedia journalism programmes work as journalists, reporters, producers, editors, and content creators across broadcast, digital, and print media. Others move into communications, public relations, content strategy, and media management. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in journalism or media.
