BA Modern Languages and Business
About this course
Modern languages and business is a programme that prepares graduates to work effectively in the international economic environment by combining genuine linguistic competence with a thorough grounding in business and management. Language graduates who can also think clearly about strategy, finance, marketing, and operations are distinctly more valuable to international organisations than those who bring only one or the other capability, and this degree is designed to develop both to a genuine standard rather than treating either as peripheral. At the University of Reading, this four-year programme allows you to develop your language skills in one or more modern languages to an advanced level alongside the core content of a business management education. Reading has a well-regarded business school and a strong tradition in modern languages, and the programme takes advantage of both. Your language study includes both linguistic competence in speaking, writing, and reading, and the cultural and social knowledge of the communities in which your chosen language or languages are spoken. Your business studies cover the major functional areas of management, including strategy, marketing, finance, operations, and human resources, developed through case studies, project work, and analytical engagement with real business questions. Graduates move into international business roles in organisations of all sizes, where the combination of language skills and business understanding is directly applicable. Management consultancy, international marketing, export and trade, financial services with an international dimension, diplomatic and governmental roles, and careers in international organisations such as the EU and UN are all natural destinations. Language teaching, translation, and publishing are further options for those whose primary interest is in the linguistic dimension of the degree. Postgraduate study in business, international management, or language studies provides a route to deeper expertise.
