BA Modern Greek and Czech (with Slovak)
About this course
Modern Greek and Czech with Slovak at the University of Oxford is a four-year combination that spans two distinct European linguistic and cultural worlds. Modern Greek is the living descendant of ancient Greek, carrying not only the weight of one of the oldest and most influential literary traditions in Western culture but also the history and contemporary culture of Greece and the broader Greek-speaking world. Czech, with Slovak as an additional language in the combination, belongs to the West Slavic branch of the Indo-European family, opening access to the cultures of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, countries with extraordinary histories that include the Habsburg empire, the traumas of the twentieth century, and the remarkable transformations of the post-communist period. Oxford's tutorial system ensures that your engagement with both language traditions is intellectually demanding and individually responsive. You will develop practical proficiency in both Modern Greek and Czech, working towards fluency in reading, writing, and communication alongside deep engagement with literary and cultural texts in both languages. The programme allows considerable flexibility, enabling you to focus on literature across a range of periods, or to explore options in linguistics, philology, film, or gender studies. Oxford's tutorial format places high demands on your independent thinking and your ability to construct extended written arguments. A typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the selectivity of the Oxford modern languages programme. Graduates move into careers in academia, journalism, translation and interpreting, the diplomatic service, international organisations, publishing, cultural institutions, and international business with a focus on Greek-speaking or Czech-speaking markets. Many continue to doctoral research in one or both language areas or in comparative literature.
