About this course

Media and communications is the study of how information, culture, and meaning are produced and circulated through the technologies and institutions of mass and digital communication. Combining it with modern languages transforms the scope of that study, enabling you to engage with media systems, cultural traditions, and public discourse in more than one language and to understand how communication varies across different national and cultural contexts. The two disciplines complement each other in important ways: language study deepens your cultural sensitivity and analytical reach, while media and communications sharpens your understanding of how the societies whose language you are learning produce and consume information. At the University of Exeter, this three-year full-time programme integrates rigorous language study with critical engagement with media industries, digital culture, journalism, film, and communication theory. You will develop high-level proficiency in a modern language alongside analytical skills in media and communications. The programme includes a sandwich year placement, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience in a relevant organisation, and a year abroad, which is particularly valuable for the language strand and allows you to immerse yourself in the culture and media environment of a country where your chosen language is spoken. Work placement activity is integrated into the programme structure. A typical entry tariff of 152 points applies. You will develop skills in critical analysis, intercultural communication, research, language production, and the ability to engage fluently and analytically with media texts and institutions across more than one national context. Graduates go on to work in international media organisations, journalism, public relations, communications, diplomacy, cultural institutions, international business, and the creative industries. Postgraduate study in media studies, translation, international relations, or European studies is also a common route for those wishing to specialise further.
