BSc Midwifery
About this course
Midwifery is a profession built on the principle that pregnancy and childbirth are normal life events that deserve expert, compassionate, and woman-centred care. Midwives are autonomous practitioners who provide care to women throughout pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period, and who work closely with obstetricians, neonatologists, and other healthcare professionals when additional clinical support is needed. The role encompasses clinical skill, emotional intelligence, health promotion, and the ability to support women and families through one of the most significant experiences of their lives. At Anglia Ruskin you will study the science and practice of midwifery across three years of full-time training. The programme covers anatomy and physiology of reproduction, evidence-based care in pregnancy, normal and complicated labour, newborn care, postnatal support, and the psychological and social dimensions of childbearing. Contemporary midwifery goes beyond the moment of birth, and you will develop skills in health promotion, perinatal mental health support, and working with women from diverse backgrounds and with complex needs. Clinical placements in maternity services in hospitals, birth centres, and the community are central to the programme, giving you the direct practice experience and supervised clinical hours that the Nursing and Midwifery Council requires for registration. On graduation you will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and to practise as a midwife in the UK. Career paths include community and hospital midwifery, specialist roles in areas such as high-risk obstetrics or bereavement support, education, research, and management. Many midwives develop leadership roles within maternity services or pursue postgraduate study in areas such as advanced practice, public health, or neonatal nursing.
