BSc Midwifery
About this course
Midwifery is a profession that stands at the centre of one of the most significant experiences in human life. Midwives support women and birthing people through pregnancy, labour and the early days and weeks of parenthood, providing clinical care, emotional support and health education that can shape maternal and infant outcomes in lasting ways. It is a profession that demands both clinical knowledge and exceptional interpersonal skill, the ability to monitor and respond to complex physiological processes while remaining a calm and trustworthy presence for people who are often vulnerable, frightened or overwhelmed. At Bradford, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The programme takes seriously the individuality of each midwife who trains through it, building professional formation around your strengths and identity rather than producing a standardised practitioner. You will develop the clinical knowledge of pregnancy, labour, postnatal care and newborn health, alongside the practical skills of assessment, monitoring, care planning and safe intervention. Clinical placements run throughout the programme, taking you into community midwifery, hospital labour wards, postnatal care settings and specialist antenatal services. You will develop your ability to work with women and families through the full arc of pregnancy and early parenthood, supporting normal birth while recognising and responding to complications that require escalation. Bradford's diverse urban community gives you exposure to a range of cultural contexts and social circumstances during your training. On graduating and achieving NMC registration, you are qualified to work as a midwife in NHS trusts, independent midwifery practice and private hospitals. Many midwives develop specialist interests and advanced practice roles, and leadership and education pathways offer longer-term career development.
