BEng Mechanical Engineering
About this course
Mechanical engineering is the discipline concerned with designing, building and maintaining machines and mechanical systems. It applies the principles of physics, mathematics and materials science to the creation of everything from the smallest precision components to large-scale power generation and industrial equipment. Its scope is enormous, spanning automotive, aerospace, energy, robotics, biomedical devices and manufacturing, and mechanical engineers are involved at every stage of a product's life, from concept and simulation through prototyping and manufacture to operation and decommissioning. At Sheffield Hallam University the programme takes a practice-based approach, developing your knowledge of mechanical science, design, materials, manufacture and engineering systems through hands-on work as well as theoretical study. The course prepares you for diverse engineering roles with a focus on providing optimal and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing industry. A foundation year is available for students who need additional preparation before the main degree begins, and the programme includes a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities so that you graduate with substantial professional experience. The full programme runs full time over three years, following the foundation year if taken. Mechanical engineers are in high demand across a very wide range of sectors. Graduates work in automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, defence, consumer products, healthcare technology and civil infrastructure. Graduate roles typically develop towards chartered engineering status through recognised professional institutions. The sandwich year significantly strengthens employability and professional connections. Postgraduate study in areas such as advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, robotics or structural engineering is available for those who want to develop deeper technical expertise.
