BEng Civil and Structural Engineering
About this course
Civil and structural engineering shapes the built world at its most fundamental level. Roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, high-rise buildings and water systems all depend on engineers who can calculate loads, understand materials, manage ground conditions and translate design ambition into safe, lasting physical reality. Structural engineering adds a specialist focus on the forces acting within and upon structures, and how those structures are designed to carry them without failure. The two disciplines are closely related and studied together here at Bradford. This three-year full-time programme at the University of Bradford includes a foundation year, which provides the mathematical, scientific and engineering foundations you need before moving into the core degree. You will study structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, geotechnics, materials science, project management and design throughout the programme, developing both theoretical understanding and the practical problem-solving skills that the profession demands. Bradford's approach emphasises smaller class sizes and interactive group work, which means you spend more time engaging directly with problems and with your peers, rather than in large passive lectures. This collaborative environment reflects the way real engineering projects are delivered. Civil and structural engineers are in sustained demand across the UK and internationally. Graduates pursue careers in consulting engineering, contracting, infrastructure project management, local and national government, transport authorities and construction. Many work towards chartered engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers, and the degree provides a foundation for that professional development. Further study at master's level in structural engineering, project management or specialist fields such as geotechnics or bridge engineering is also a common route for those who want to deepen their expertise.
