About this course

Marine biology is the scientific study of life in the oceans, from microscopic phytoplankton and bacteria through invertebrates, fish and marine mammals to the complex ecosystems that span from coastal zones to the deep sea. It draws on ecology, physiology, biochemistry, evolutionary biology and oceanography to understand how marine organisms live, reproduce, behave and interact with one another and with their environment. The oceans cover more than seventy per cent of the Earth's surface, regulate its climate, produce much of its oxygen and provide food, livelihoods and cultural meaning to billions of people, making marine biology one of the most important and urgent fields of scientific inquiry. At Swansea University this three-year, full-time programme gives you the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to the environmental and societal challenges facing marine ecosystems, from overfishing and pollution to ocean acidification and the effects of climate change on marine biodiversity. You will develop a deep understanding of marine ecology and the biological principles that govern life in the sea, studying organisms and systems at multiple scales and developing practical skills in field sampling, laboratory analysis, data collection and scientific communication. Wales's extensive coastline and proximity to diverse marine habitats makes Swansea an excellent base for marine biological research and fieldwork. Graduates of marine biology programmes find careers in marine conservation, environmental consultancy, fisheries management, oceanographic research, marine protected area management, government environmental agencies, NGOs and the aquaculture and offshore industries. Many continue to postgraduate study, including research degrees in marine biology, ecology, oceanography or environmental science, and some pursue careers in science communication, education, policy or technology sectors that engage with the health of ocean systems.
