About this course

Marine biology is the study of life in the ocean and other saltwater environments, from the microorganisms that form the base of marine food webs to the great whales at the top of them, and from the biodiversity of coral reefs to the organisms adapted to the darkness and cold of the deep sea. The oceans cover more than two-thirds of the Earth's surface and are central to the global climate system, the carbon cycle, and the provision of food for billions of people. Understanding the marine environment, and the effects of human activity on it, is one of the defining scientific challenges of the present century. At the University of Essex, this four-year BSc (Hons) lets you explore marine biology at every scale, from the aquaria on campus and the estuaries and coastal ecosystems nearby to whole ocean systems and their dynamics at a global level. You will develop knowledge in ecology, physiology, taxonomy, oceanography, and conservation, alongside practical skills in fieldwork, laboratory work, and data analysis. Essex's location near the Essex coast and estuaries provides genuine fieldwork opportunities, and the programme is designed to build both scientific understanding and the practical abilities needed for work in the marine and environmental sectors. Graduates in marine biology work in a wide range of sectors where knowledge of marine and aquatic systems is needed. Environmental consultancy, fisheries management, nature conservation, marine policy, and research are all common destinations. Government agencies including the Environment Agency and Marine Management Organisation, wildlife charities, and international bodies working on ocean governance all employ people with this background. Academic research is a significant pathway for those interested in postgraduate study at Masters or doctoral level in marine biology, conservation biology, or environmental science. The typical entry tariff is 104 points.
