BA Linguistics and Spanish
About this course
Linguistics is the scientific study of language as a human phenomenon: how it is structured, how it is acquired, how it varies across communities and changes over time, and what it reveals about human cognition and society. Spanish, the second most widely spoken language in the world by native speakers, offers a rich case study for applying linguistic analysis across phonetics, syntax, semantics, and sociolinguistics, while also opening access to a literary and cultural tradition of extraordinary breadth spanning Europe, Latin America, and beyond. At the University of Manchester this four-year, full-time BA enables you to delve into the science of language, exploring it as an everyday phenomenon that impacts lives on both an individual and a global scale, while simultaneously developing your Spanish to a high level of communicative and academic proficiency. You will engage with the theoretical frameworks of modern linguistics alongside detailed analysis of Spanish as a linguistic system, examining how it varies across regions and registers and how its speakers use it to construct meaning and identity. A sandwich year is built into the programme, and work placement opportunities are available, giving you professional experience in relevant settings before you graduate. Graduates of linguistics and Spanish are well placed for careers where language expertise is a core requirement or a significant advantage. Many move into translation, interpreting, language teaching, speech and language therapy, or natural language processing in technology. Others build careers in publishing, journalism, international business, diplomacy, international organisations, and cultural institutions where both Spanish proficiency and analytical understanding of language are genuinely valued. The programme also provides strong foundations for postgraduate study in linguistics, Spanish studies, translation, applied linguistics, or cognitive science for those who want to develop deeper theoretical expertise.
