Journalism is the practice of gathering, verifying, and communicating information to public audiences in ways that inform, engage, and hold power to account. In a media environment characterised by rapid change, platform proliferation, and widespread concern about the quality and reliability of information, the skills of a trained journalist, the capacity to identify a story, check its facts, tell it clearly, and do so responsibly, have never been more important. At the University of Chester, this three-year, full-time degree equips you with the essential skills and knowledge to work in a media industry that is fast-moving and demanding of versatility and professional judgement. You will study news reporting, feature writing, investigative journalism, interviewing, media law, and ethics, alongside digital journalism skills including multimedia production, data journalism, and the use of social media platforms as both news sources and distribution channels. The programme has a strong practical orientation, encouraging you to produce journalism throughout your studies rather than simply studying it, and you will build a portfolio of work that demonstrates your skills to employers. A year abroad provides an additional dimension, giving you experience of a different media environment and broadening your understanding of how journalism operates across national and cultural contexts. Graduates of journalism find careers across print, broadcast, digital, and podcast formats, as well as in public relations, communications, content strategy, and corporate communications.
