MA International Business Management
About this course
International business management is the study of how organisations operate across national borders, and what that crossing of borders adds in complexity, opportunity and challenge. It is a discipline that builds on the core foundations of business, including strategy, finance, marketing, operations and organisational behaviour, and then applies those foundations to the particular demands of global markets: different regulatory environments, cultural norms, economic conditions, political risks and consumer behaviours. The field is genuinely interdisciplinary, drawing on economics, sociology, political science and cultural studies as well as the functional areas of management. This four-year full-time MA (Hons) at Heriot-Watt University includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, giving you deep professional and international experience built into the programme structure. The degree passes business theory through a real-world filter throughout, developing specialist knowledge and interpersonal skills that prepare you for the positions, organisations and industries of the future. You will study all aspects of business from both practical and academic perspectives, developing the ability to analyse complex international business situations, to lead and work in diverse teams, and to apply sound strategic thinking across different cultural and institutional contexts. Graduates are equipped for management careers across industries and sectors with an international dimension. Business development, management consultancy, international marketing, supply chain and operations, finance, human resources and entrepreneurship are all relevant paths. The combination of four years of study, professional placement and international experience makes graduates particularly attractive to employers seeking people who can operate confidently in global environments from the outset of their careers. Further study at postgraduate level, including MBA programmes, is a natural progression for those aiming for senior management roles.
