BA Interior Architecture and Design
About this course
Interior architecture and design is the practice of shaping the built environment from the inside, creating spaces that respond to the needs of the people who will use them while also addressing aesthetic, cultural, environmental and structural considerations. Interior architects work on a wide range of projects, from domestic interiors and retail environments to healthcare settings, hospitality venues, offices and cultural institutions, transforming existing spaces or designing new ones that improve the quality of life and experience for those who inhabit them. The discipline requires both creative vision and technical understanding, including knowledge of structure, materials, lighting, acoustics, building regulations and construction processes. At the University of Lincoln this three-year, full-time programme inspires you to design interiors that respond to today's challenges and imagine a more sustainable and culturally vibrant future. You will develop skills in spatial design, technical drawing, digital modelling, materials knowledge, furniture design, lighting design and project management, working through studio projects that take you from initial research and concept through to presentation-quality proposals and technical documentation. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you direct professional experience in interior design or architecture studios and the opportunity to encounter different design cultures and traditions internationally. Graduates work as interior designers, interior architects, spatial designers, retail and hospitality environment designers, exhibition and set designers, and architectural visualisers in design studios, architectural practices, property developers, contractors and corporate real estate teams. Some build independent practices or pursue specialist work in healthcare design, sustainable interiors or heritage settings. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in interior design, architecture or spatial design, developing more advanced professional and research credentials.
