BA Fashion Design
About this course
Fashion design is the creative discipline at the heart of one of the world's most significant cultural and commercial industries. It is concerned not just with garments as objects but with how clothing communicates identity, reflects culture, responds to the body, and shapes how people present themselves to the world. Fashion designers must be both visually and technically proficient, capable of generating original ideas and translating them through pattern-cutting, construction, materials knowledge, and an understanding of how garments will actually be made and worn. At Anglia Ruskin University, this three-year, full-time programme invites you to forge your identity as a designer, with the opportunity to specialise in menswear or womenswear. You will develop skills in drawing and visual research, pattern making, garment construction, and the conceptual thinking that drives strong collections. The programme puts your work into contact with the industry through live projects, giving you experience of the kind of briefs and working conditions that professional designers encounter and helping you build a portfolio that reflects both creative ambition and technical competence. You will develop a critical understanding of fashion's cultural, economic, and social dimensions alongside your practical skills. Graduates of fashion design programmes go on to careers as fashion designers, design assistants, pattern cutters, garment technologists, and stylists in fashion houses, high street brands, sportswear companies, and independent labels. Others move into costume design, fashion journalism, buying, merchandising, or fashion education. Many build independent practices or found their own labels. The combination of creative confidence, technical skill, and industry awareness the degree develops is the foundation for a career in a sector that rewards both originality and professional rigour.
