BA Interior Architecture and Design
About this course
Interior architecture and design sits at the intersection of spatial thinking, technical knowledge and human understanding. Unlike interior decoration, which focuses on surfaces and furnishings, interior architecture is concerned with the structure of space itself: how walls, light, circulation routes and material choices shape the way people move through and inhabit a building. It is a discipline that begins with people, asking what activities will happen in a space, who will use it, and how the design of the environment can support those activities and the wellbeing of the people within them. This three-year degree at Birmingham City University includes a sandwich year with a work placement, so you will gain real professional experience before you graduate. In the studio you will develop skills in spatial analysis, technical drawing, model making and the use of digital design tools, alongside a broader understanding of design history, materials, lighting and the regulatory frameworks that govern built environments. Projects will ask you to design spaces that are responsive to the people who will use them, pushing you to think not just about aesthetics but about ergonomics, accessibility, sustainability and the social purpose of design. Graduates from interior architecture and design programmes move into roles in commercial interior design, retail design, hospitality and restaurant design, exhibition design, stage and set design, and workspace consultancy. Some work with architectural practices, particularly on fit-out and refurbishment projects. Others move into design management, project coordination, or specialist areas such as lighting design or sustainable interiors. Further study through postgraduate degrees or professional qualifications in architecture and spatial design is a route for those who wish to develop their practice and take on more complex projects.
