BA Industrial Design
About this course
Industrial design is the creative and technical discipline concerned with designing the products that people use every day, from the tools we hold in our hands to the appliances in our kitchens, the vehicles we travel in, and the medical devices that support our health. It sits between art and engineering, requiring both aesthetic sensibility and an understanding of how objects are made, how they function, and how they will be experienced by real people in real situations. Good industrial design makes things work better, look better, and feel more intuitive, and increasingly it must also make things more sustainable. At Loughborough University, this three-year, full-time BA programme equips you with the knowledge, understanding, and skills to develop future-facing products through creative exploration and independent judgement. You will engage with design research, concept development, sketching and visualisation, prototyping, materials and manufacturing processes, and the human and social factors that should shape design decisions. Loughborough is one of the UK's leading design schools, with excellent studio facilities and close connections to industry, and the programme places a strong emphasis on the development of creative confidence alongside technical competence. Graduates of industrial design programmes go on to careers as product designers, design consultants, UX and interaction designers, materials specialists, and design managers in manufacturing companies, design consultancies, consumer goods firms, healthcare technology businesses, and transport companies. Many also move into sustainable design, service design, or design research roles. Others continue to postgraduate study in industrial design, design engineering, or related fields. The combination of creative and technical capabilities that an industrial design degree develops is genuinely valued across a remarkably wide range of sectors.
