BA Human Resource Management
About this course
Human resource management is the discipline concerned with how organisations attract, develop, motivate, and retain the people they depend on. It covers the full employment lifecycle from recruitment and selection through to learning and development, performance management, reward, and employment relations, and it operates within a legal and ethical framework that shapes how organisations can and should treat their employees. As organisations have come to recognise that their people are among their most important strategic assets, the function has grown in scope and influence, and graduates with HR knowledge and skills are in demand across every sector. At Northampton this three-year full-time programme integrates business issues with the management of people, helping you apply your learning to real-life scenarios rather than treating HR as a purely theoretical exercise. You will explore the diverse roles that HR plays across organisations of different sizes and types, from small businesses to global corporations, developing both the technical knowledge of HR practice and the understanding of organisational and business context that effective HR professionals need. The programme develops skills in employment law, recruitment, coaching and development, reward design, employee relations, and strategic HR, alongside the communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills that practising HR professionals use every day. A sandwich year is available, providing the opportunity to spend a full year in an HR role before completing your degree. Work placements are also integrated throughout the programme, ensuring that professional experience runs alongside academic learning. Graduates move into HR roles across private, public, and voluntary sector organisations. Many pursue the CIPD Level 5 or Level 7 qualification in parallel with or after their degree. Postgraduate study in human resources, business, or organisational psychology is an option for those wishing to develop further expertise.
