About this course

Graphic communication design is the discipline of creating visual solutions to communication problems: designing the information systems, brand identities, editorial publications, digital interfaces, signage and campaigns through which organisations and individuals reach their audiences. It combines conceptual thinking with technical skill, asking not only what something should look like but why those visual choices serve the communication goals at hand. At its best, graphic communication design is both rigorous and inventive, grounded in a deep understanding of how images, type and space work together to carry meaning. At the University of the Arts London, this three-year full-time degree is taught within one of the world's leading art and design education environments, developing your creative, conceptual, technical and critical skills to a professional standard. You will work across a range of design disciplines, exploring typography, brand design, editorial layout, information design, digital and interactive design, and motion graphics. Critical and historical study runs alongside studio practice, giving you the intellectual framework to situate your work within the traditions and debates of the discipline. UAL's location in London gives you direct access to one of the world's great concentrations of creative industry, and your studies will be shaped by the proximity of design studios, agencies, cultural organisations and media companies of all kinds. Typical entry is around 136 UCAS tariff points. Graduates move into careers as graphic designers, art directors, brand consultants, information designers, UX and interface designers, motion graphic designers and creative directors in studios, agencies and in-house design departments across commercial, cultural and public sector organisations. The quality of the UAL portfolio and the institution's global reputation open doors widely in the creative industries. Further study at masters level in graphic design, communication design or design research is available for those who wish to develop their practice or pursue academic careers.
