BA Contemporary Craft and Contemporary Fashion Design
About this course
Contemporary craft and contemporary fashion design is a combination that pairs two disciplines united by a commitment to making: craft as the practice of working thoughtfully with materials, tools, and processes, and fashion design as the creative and technical practice of designing garments and clothing systems that express identity, culture, and aesthetic vision. Both disciplines require skill in working with materials, sensitivity to form and function, and the conceptual thinking that distinguishes design from mere production. Studying them together allows you to develop a broader creative vocabulary that draws on both craft's depth of process and fashion's engagement with the body, the wearer, and the social world. At Liverpool Hope University in the heart of a creative city with a strong art and design tradition, this three-year programme includes a sandwich year in industry with work placement and a year abroad, giving you a structurally rich combination of professional and international experience. The contemporary craft strand builds a supportive community of emerging makers and designers, developing your skills in hands-on design and making, and leading to specialised craft works, innovative projects, and new career directions. The contemporary fashion design strand develops your skills in garment construction, textile knowledge, and the creative research and design processes that underlie fashion as a discipline. The sandwich year gives you extended professional experience in a craft, design, or fashion context, while the year abroad broadens your creative and cultural references. Graduates work in fashion design, textile design, product design, craft practice, arts education, styling, costume design, arts administration, and the range of creative roles at the intersection of making, design, and fashion. Many develop independent practices or small businesses alongside other creative work. Postgraduate study in fashion, craft, or design is a further option.
