BA Global Philosophy & Worldviews and Media & Communication
About this course
Global philosophy and worldviews with media and communication is a pairing that takes seriously both the deepest questions about human values and knowledge, and the media systems through which those questions are debated, represented and given public form in the contemporary world. Global philosophy and worldviews moves beyond Western philosophy to engage with African, Chinese, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist and other intellectual and spiritual traditions, asking what diverse cultures say about truth, ethics, the self and what it means to live well. Media and communication examines the channels, platforms and practices through which ideas circulate, publics form, and meaning is made at scale. At Liverpool Hope University you will explore both disciplines with genuine intellectual engagement, developing the critical tools to analyse media systems and cultural texts alongside the philosophical literacy to engage seriously with worldviews very different from your own. The combination is particularly productive for understanding how media can both transmit and transform cultural and religious identities. The programme runs over three years full time and includes a sandwich year in industry, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you professional and international experience alongside your academic development. Graduates are well placed for careers in journalism, broadcasting, communications, interfaith dialogue, educational publishing, arts administration, international development, the civil service and the voluntary sector. The combination of philosophical breadth and media analytical skill is valuable in any professional context that requires engaging with diverse communities and communicating across cultural boundaries. Postgraduate study in philosophy, media, cultural studies, communications or religious studies provides natural further routes.
