BA German
About this course
German is the most widely spoken native language in Western Europe, with over 90 million speakers, and Germany occupies a central position in European politics, culture, and commerce. Studying German at degree level means developing genuine linguistic competence alongside a deep understanding of the societies, histories, literatures, and cultures of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. German has been the language of major intellectual and artistic traditions, from Goethe and Schiller through to Kafka and Brecht, and of scientific and philosophical writing that has shaped the modern world, making it a subject of extraordinary depth. At the University of Liverpool, this four-year, full-time programme will help you become highly proficient in writing, reading, speaking, and listening to contemporary German, while also developing a rich understanding of the history, politics, linguistics, culture, literature, and cinema of the German-speaking world. The four-year structure allows the degree to encompass both the extensive language training that genuine proficiency demands and the cultural and intellectual breadth that gives that proficiency its meaning and context. Liverpool's excellent links with a wide range of employers in Germany and in sectors where German is commercially significant ensure that the degree is connected to real professional opportunities. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points. German graduates are among the most sought-after language graduates by employers. Germany's significance as a trading partner with the UK means German speakers are valued across business, finance, manufacturing, law, and consultancy in sectors with European connections. The public sector, the foreign office, diplomatic service, international organisations, journalism, publishing, education, translation and interpreting, and academic research are all natural destinations. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in German studies, linguistics, area studies, or translation, while others move directly into careers where German gives them a significant professional advantage.
