BA German and Portuguese
About this course
German and Portuguese is a rare and rewarding combination that gives you access to two of the world's most significant languages and the diverse cultures they carry. German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe and is central to the economic and cultural life of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as being a major language of scholarship and philosophy. Portuguese has an even wider global reach, spoken across Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, and several other nations on four continents, making it one of the world's largest languages by number of speakers. At University College London, this four-year full-time programme is a joint honours degree split equally between the two languages. You will develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation in both German and Portuguese, and you will study cultural topics spanning literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics from the worlds in which these languages are spoken. The wide range of modules available means you can tailor your degree to your own interests, building depth in the areas of German and Lusophone culture that matter most to you. In the third year you will spend time abroad in countries where your two languages are spoken, gaining the direct immersive experience that accelerates linguistic and cultural development in ways that classroom study cannot replicate. Graduates with this combination of languages are genuinely unusual in the job market, and that rarity has value. International business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, journalism, cultural organisations, international law, and European institutions are all settings where German and Portuguese together are a distinctive and practical asset. Postgraduate study in translation and interpreting, European studies, Lusophone studies, German studies, or international relations is a natural route for those who wish to develop their expertise further or pursue specialist careers.
