About this course

Geography, sustainable development, and climate change is a degree for the moment we are in: a period when the interrelationships between human systems and the natural environment have become one of the defining challenges of our time. Geography provides the analytical framework for understanding how people, places, and environments are connected. Sustainable development examines how those connections can be managed in ways that meet present needs without compromising the future. Climate change addresses the most urgent systemic risk of the twenty-first century, asking how it is happening, what its consequences are, and what can be done. At the University of Sussex, you will explore these themes together, examining how disasters, food insecurity, migration, inequality, and environmental policy are all connected in complex systems that require interdisciplinary understanding to address. The programme develops fieldwork skills, quantitative and qualitative research methods, and the capacity to think across disciplines and scales. It includes a foundation year, a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, making it one of the most experientially rich degree programmes in its field. The programme is studied full-time. Graduates of geography, sustainable development, and climate change programmes pursue careers in environmental consultancy, sustainability management, international development, policy research, NGOs, local and national government, urban planning, and research. The combination of geographical thinking, policy literacy, and environmental science knowledge is highly valued in a world where sustainability is moving from a niche concern to a central professional competency. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in climate change policy, environmental management, development studies, or geography.
