BA Geography with International Relations
About this course
Geography with international relations is a combination that connects the study of the physical and human world in spatial terms with the analysis of how states and other actors interact across political boundaries. Geography is one of the broadest disciplines available at degree level, spanning physical processes such as climate, geomorphology, and ecology alongside human geography's concern with cities, migration, development, inequality, and the politics of place. International relations examines how the international system is structured, how foreign policy is made, and how global challenges from conflict and terrorism to trade and climate change are addressed through international institutions and cooperation. At Plymouth, this three-year degree with a foundation year provides a supported entry into higher education study before progressing to the main programme, which also includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placements. You will study the historical development of the international political system, examining the major processes and actors that have shaped the contemporary world since 1945, alongside geographical modules that develop spatial analytical skills and understanding of the physical and human dimensions of global change. The year abroad gives you a direct international experience that is particularly meaningful in a degree concerned with the global dimensions of both geography and politics. The combination of spatial thinking and international analysis trains graduates who can understand global challenges from multiple perspectives. Geography with international relations graduates move into careers in international development, environmental policy, diplomacy, journalism, the civil service, urban planning, consultancy, and NGOs. The geographical skills, particularly in data analysis, spatial thinking, and environmental understanding, are increasingly valuable in organisations dealing with climate change, sustainability, and resource management. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in geography, international relations, development studies, or environmental policy, while others enter professional careers where the combination of global thinking and analytical skill is directly applicable.
