BA French with Film Studies
About this course
French with film studies at UCL is a four-year joint honours programme that develops genuine linguistic proficiency in French alongside a rigorous engagement with cinema as an art form, industry, and cultural force. The four-year BA French with Film Studies is split between French and Film Studies, with the language part taught in the School of European Languages, Culture and Society. You will take modules not only in language, covering speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation, but also in cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, politics, and other relevant fields designed to complement your language learning. The film studies component develops your understanding of cinema history and theory, narrative and visual language, genre, authorship, and the cultural and political dimensions of film. At University College London, a wide variety of modules gives you the ability to tailor your degree to your areas of interest, developing depth in the aspects of French culture and cinema that matter most to you. The four-year structure is shaped around a year abroad spent in a French-speaking country, which is built into the degree and transforms your linguistic competence from a high level of academic proficiency to genuine communicative fluency, while also extending your first-hand understanding of French cultural life and the screen industries of the francophone world. With a typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme at one of the UK's leading research universities. Graduates pursue careers in film criticism and journalism, broadcasting and the media, translation and interpreting, the cultural and creative industries, teaching, publishing, arts administration, international business, the civil service, and any field where the combination of French-language competence and a sophisticated understanding of cinema as culture is professionally valuable. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in film studies, French, or European cultural studies.
