About this course
French and philosophy is a combination that brings together two disciplines deeply rooted in the French-speaking world, and the connection is not merely geographical. Some of the most significant philosophy of the twentieth century was written in French, from existentialism and phenomenology to structuralism and poststructuralism, and understanding these traditions in the original language transforms what is accessible and how deeply you can engage with it. At the same time, philosophy and language study share an attention to precision, to the weight of words, and to the importance of reading carefully, making the two subjects natural intellectual companions. At the University of Stirling this four-year programme includes a year abroad, giving you sustained immersion in a French-speaking country and the opportunity to engage with French academic and cultural life at first hand. You will develop French language skills to a high level of proficiency alongside a thorough grounding in philosophy, exploring areas such as epistemology, ethics, political philosophy, metaphysics, and the history of philosophy from the ancient world to the present. The French dimension of the course opens up philosophical traditions that are often underrepresented in Anglophone philosophy curricula, enriching your understanding of the discipline as a whole. Graduates from French and philosophy programmes work in a wide range of careers.
