About this course
French and history is a pairing that rewards intellectual seriousness about both language and the past. French is one of the world's major languages, spoken across five continents and carrying an extraordinarily rich literary and cultural tradition. History trains you to read primary sources, evaluate competing interpretations, and construct sustained arguments about how and why the past unfolded as it did. Together, the two disciplines develop your capacity for close reading, rigorous thinking, and clear communication across very different kinds of evidence. The four-year full-time French and History programme at the University of Warwick allows you to pursue both subjects in depth. French can be taken from beginner, post-beginner, or advanced level, meaning the programme is open to students with a range of prior linguistic experience, and you will be taught to a high standard of written and spoken proficiency. Your historical studies will engage you with a wide chronological and geographical range, developing the analytical skills that allow historians to make sense of complex events and structures. A sandwich year and work placement are included in the programme, giving you professional experience in a relevant context before you graduate.
