BA Finnish and Portuguese
About this course
Finnish and Portuguese is an unusual pairing that rewards the linguistically adventurous. Finnish is one of Europe's most structurally distinctive languages, part of the Finno-Ugric family and unrelated to the Indo-European languages that dominate the continent. It is the language of a country with one of the world's highest standards of living and a remarkably successful technology and design culture. Portuguese, by contrast, is a major world language spoken by hundreds of millions of people across Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, and many other countries, carrying with it a rich literary tradition and an economic footprint that spans several continents. At University College London, this four-year full-time programme takes you to an advanced level in both languages. UCL's School of European Languages, Culture and Society has strong expertise in both Finnish and Portuguese, and you will develop rigorous linguistic proficiency alongside engagement with the literatures, histories, and cultures of the Finnish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking worlds. Studying languages as structurally different as Finnish and Portuguese develops exceptional analytical flexibility, forcing you to approach grammar, syntax, and meaning from radically different starting points. Graduates with Finnish and Portuguese occupy a very distinctive niche in the graduate market. The Finnish language opens doors in Nordic business, technology, and public affairs, as well as in academic Finno-Ugric studies. Portuguese opens access to Brazilian commerce, which is among the largest in the world, as well as to Lusophone Africa and the Portuguese-speaking diaspora. Translation, interpreting, international business, diplomacy, and journalism are all career paths available to graduates with this combination. Academic research in linguistics, area studies, or comparative literature is another direction. Postgraduate study in any of these areas is well supported by UCL's research environment.
