BA Fine Art
About this course
Fine art is one of the most intellectually ambitious and personally demanding areas of study available at university level. It asks you to develop an individual artistic practice, to articulate what you are doing and why, and to position your work in relation to the history and contemporary context of art. Fine art graduates are not just people who can make things well; they are people who can think visually, work through ideas without predetermined answers, and communicate meaning through material form. The discipline values autonomy, rigour, and the willingness to take creative risks. At the University of Leeds, this three-year, full-time degree develops your artistic practice alongside critical and theoretical understanding of art's history and contemporary condition. You will work across a range of media and approaches, developing your own creative voice through studio work, critical reflection, and engagement with the broader art world. Leeds has a vibrant cultural scene and strong connections to the gallery and museum sector, which enriches the context for your studies. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, extending your professional and cultural experience well beyond the studio. Graduates from fine art programmes pursue diverse careers. Many continue to practice as artists, combining studio work with teaching, community arts practice, arts administration, residency programmes, and the many other activities that sustain an artistic career. Others move into related fields including curation, arts education, gallery management, publishing, design, and the creative industries more broadly. The combination of independent thinking, creative problem-solving, and project management that fine art develops is also valued in sectors that need lateral thinkers and communicators. Postgraduate study in fine art, curating, or art education is a path for those who want to develop their practice or move into research and teaching roles.
