BA Fine Art - Painting & Printmaking
About this course
Fine art in the specialisms of painting and printmaking is a practice-based discipline that places studio work, material investigation, and the development of a personal artistic voice at the centre of your studies. These are disciplines with ancient lineages but entirely contemporary ambitions: painting continues to evolve in response to the world around it, and printmaking encompasses everything from traditional intaglio and relief processes to digital and experimental hybrid methods. Studying them at degree level means learning to work seriously and persistently in a studio environment, to research what you are making and why, and to develop the critical vocabulary needed to place your own practice in relation to the wider history and culture of visual art. At Glasgow School of Art this four-year full-time programme is the largest specialist programme within the School of Fine Art. The programme is practical and theoretical, focusing on enquiry and production in a lively studio environment in which students are led by their own research and supported to bring together form, content, and contextualisation. Each year builds on the previous one in terms of technical development, content, reflection, and research, ensuring that your practice deepens progressively. You will develop material and technical knowledge across painting and printmaking, critical insights about your own work and the broader art world, and the communication tools needed to articulate and present what you are making. Glasgow School of Art's long tradition and its location in one of the UK's most vibrant art cities provide an exceptional environment for this kind of development. Graduates in fine art find careers across the visual arts, cultural sector, and creative industries. Practising as an artist, pursuing residencies, exhibiting work, and developing studio practice are central ambitions for many graduates. Others move into art education, curatorial work, arts administration, community arts practice, or design-related fields. Postgraduate study in fine art, curating, or arts management is a common next step, and Glasgow School of Art has strong traditions of graduates who continue to significant national and international recognition in their practice.
