BA Film Production
About this course
Film production is the craft and discipline of bringing moving image stories to life. It encompasses the full journey from initial concept to finished film, including screenwriting, directing, cinematography, sound design, editing and the complex organisational work of managing a production from development through to post-production. It is a collaborative art form that demands creative vision alongside practical and technical competence, and it sits at the heart of one of the most influential cultural industries in the world. At the University of Salford, this three-year full-time programme also includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in an international context and broaden your perspective on filmmaking across different cultures and industries. You will develop skills across the full range of film production disciplines, including camerawork, scriptwriting, audio production, directing and working effectively as part of a production team. The programme takes a hands-on approach, putting you on set and behind the camera as well as engaging you with the theoretical and critical frameworks that help you understand film as both an art form and an industry. You will learn to develop ideas, collaborate with others and execute your creative vision under real production conditions. Graduates from film production programmes work across the screen industries in roles including director, camera operator, sound recordist, editor, producer, production coordinator and scriptwriter. Many find employment in television, advertising, documentary, corporate video and digital content as well as in film itself. The skills developed through film production, including storytelling, project management, technical media competence and creative problem-solving, are also valued in marketing, communications, education and the wider creative sector. Postgraduate study in film, screen studies, documentary, screenwriting or media production is a route for those who want to develop their craft further or move into academic research.
