BA Fashion Image Making & Styling
About this course
Fashion image making and styling is a creative discipline at the intersection of fashion, photography, visual communication and cultural commentary. Fashion images are powerful cultural artefacts, shaping how we understand beauty, identity, aspiration and the times we live in. From magazine editorials and advertising campaigns to music videos, film and social media content, the people who conceive, direct and style fashion images are making choices about how culture is represented and how fashion communicates its ideas. This is a field that rewards both creative vision and practical skill, and the ability to understand visual culture critically alongside making it. At Salford, this three-year full-time programme develops your creative and technical abilities in fashion image making alongside a critical understanding of the fashion and media industries in which this work operates. You will develop skills in styling, art direction, visual research and the production of fashion images across different contexts and formats, working with photographers, models and creative teams to realise your ideas. The programme engages with the cultural, commercial and digital dimensions of fashion imagery, reflecting the reality that images now circulate across Instagram and digital platforms as much as they do in print. You will build a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative development and your ability to produce compelling fashion images across a range of briefs and contexts. Industry connections and professional practice are woven through the programme. Graduates work as fashion stylists, art directors, creative directors, fashion editors, image consultants and visual content creators across magazines, advertising agencies, fashion brands, film and television, and digital platforms. Some graduates develop freelance practices, while others move into full-time roles within fashion and media organisations. Further study in fashion, photography or visual arts is an option for those who want to deepen their practice.
