About this course

Fashion design with a specialism in knit is a degree that develops your skills in one of the most technically demanding and creatively rich areas of fashion: the design and construction of knitted textiles and garments. Knitwear has moved from functional textile production to a site of significant design innovation, with the potential of industrial and hand-knitting machines to create complex textures, patterns and structures that flat fabric cannot achieve making it a field of growing creative and commercial interest. At the University of the Arts London, this four-year full-time programme is part of the broader Fashion programme at what is one of the world's most prestigious fashion education institutions, and includes a sandwich year and work placement to give you direct professional experience. You will develop technical skills in both hand and machine knitting, pattern construction, textile design and the application of digital tools to knitwear design, alongside the research, concept development and critical skills that professional design practice requires. The programme is ambitious in its creative expectations, and you will be challenged to develop a distinctive design voice rather than simply reproducing existing trends. UAL's networks across the fashion industry are extensive, and the placement year gives you direct experience in a fashion or textile company, potentially including luxury brands, sportswear companies, knitwear specialists or design studios. A typical entry tariff of around 136 points is expected. Graduates work as knitwear designers, textile designers, fashion designers and design researchers across luxury fashion brands, sportswear companies, high street retailers, knitwear manufacturers and their own independent labels. UAL graduates in fashion are found in some of the most prominent design houses and studios in the world, and the programme's reputation opens doors that few other fashion degrees can match. Many graduates also proceed to postgraduate study in fashion design, textiles or material culture.
