BA Fashion Design and Technology
About this course
Fashion design and technology occupies the productive boundary between creative vision and technical realisation in the clothing and apparel industry. A fashion designer who understands technology is far better equipped to work with manufacturers, to innovate with new materials and production processes, and to navigate an industry that is being transformed by sustainability pressures, digital design tools, and rapid changes in the relationship between performance and aesthetics. From sportswear and activewear to high fashion and technical apparel, the integration of design thinking with engineering knowledge is increasingly central to how the industry works. At Loughborough University, this three-year full-time programme reflects the university's strong tradition in design and technology, bringing together the creative and the technical in ways that produce graduates who are distinctive in the fashion market. You will develop skills in garment construction, pattern engineering, and product development alongside training in materials science, textile technology, and emerging production methods. The programme takes the full lifecycle of a garment seriously, from concept and design through technical specification, sampling, and production. You will engage with the computational and digital tools now central to fashion design practice, as well as with the human and environmental dimensions of production and consumption. The typical entry tariff is 168 UCAS points, and the programme is studied full time. Graduates from fashion design and technology programmes work across the fashion and apparel industry in roles including fashion designer, product developer, technical designer, garment technologist, buyer, and materials specialist. The technical dimension of the degree is particularly valued by employers in sportswear, outdoor clothing, performance apparel, and technical textiles. Further study at postgraduate level in fashion design, sustainable fashion, textile technology, or related areas is available for those who wish to specialise further.
