BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability with Placement Year
About this course
Environmental management and sustainability addresses one of the defining challenges of this century: how human societies can organise their relationship with the natural world more wisely. The discipline draws on ecology, geography, economics, policy analysis and social science to understand environmental problems and to develop practical, evidence-based responses. It is a field shaped by urgency, but also by the complexity of balancing competing interests across local, national and global scales. At the University of Reading you will study this four-year full-time programme, which includes a placement year that gives you the opportunity to apply your learning in a professional environment before you graduate. The academic content covers the ecological and physical science underpinning environmental change, alongside the policy frameworks, governance structures and management tools through which societies respond to environmental pressures. You will develop skills in environmental assessment, data analysis, stakeholder engagement and strategic planning, learning to translate scientific understanding into actionable recommendations for organisations in the public, private and third sectors. Reading's location in the Thames Valley and the university's strong research base in environmental and life sciences enrich the academic context considerably. The placement year is a significant feature of this programme. Spending an extended period working within an organisation that engages with sustainability challenges allows you to develop professional competencies, build a network and bring a more grounded perspective to your final year of study. You will return better equipped to contribute to complex projects and to articulate the value of your analytical skills to future employers. Graduates are well placed for careers in environmental consultancy, sustainability management within corporations, policy work in central and local government, roles in conservation and land management organisations, and positions in the growing field of environmental law and regulation. Further study at postgraduate level opens routes into research, specialist technical roles and leadership positions in environmental governance.
