Physical geography is the branch of geography concerned with the natural processes that shape the Earth's surface and climate: the movement of water through landscapes, the formation and erosion of landforms, the dynamics of soils, the behaviour of glaciers, and the patterns of vegetation that reflect climate and geology. It sits at the intersection of earth science and environmental science, developing both the conceptual frameworks for understanding natural systems and the practical fieldwork and analytical skills needed to study them in the field. At Aberystwyth University, set in the heart of mid-Wales with access to some of the most varied and striking landscapes in Britain, physical geography is a discipline with a particularly vivid practical context. The four-year programme with integrated foundation year is designed for students who are motivated to study physical geography at a well-established and experienced department but who would benefit from additional academic preparation before the main degree. The foundation year builds your scientific and analytical foundations, and the main degree develops your understanding of geomorphology, climatology, hydrology, ecology, and the quantitative and qualitative research methods that physical geographers use to study natural environments. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points. Graduates of physical geography programmes go on to careers in environmental consultancy, the water and flood management sector, conservation bodies, local authorities, government environmental agencies, civil engineering, and climate science. Teaching is also a common path, and the fieldwork and analytical skills the degree develops are valued in a wide range of research and technical roles. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in physical geography, environmental science, hydrology, or related disciplines.
