BA English and Philosophy
About this course
English and philosophy is a combination that places two of the most important humanistic disciplines in productive dialogue. English literature trains you to read with precision and sensitivity, to understand how language creates meaning, and to interpret texts across the full range of periods, genres and cultural contexts from the medieval to the contemporary. Philosophy trains you to analyse arguments, clarify concepts and investigate the fundamental questions of existence, knowledge, value and reason with rigour and care. Together they develop a distinctive intellectual character: the ability to engage with complex language and ideas simultaneously at the level of meaning, feeling and logical structure. At the University of Bristol this three-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year available for those who need additional preparation. You will study the fundamental philosophical principles of logic, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and political philosophy alongside English literature in its full extent and diversity from the medieval period to the present day. You will be able to explore your own interests through a range of stimulating optional and research-led subjects, building a programme of study that reflects your particular intellectual commitments within the breadth of both disciplines. English and philosophy graduates bring a combination of critical, literary and argumentative skills that is valued across law, journalism, the civil service, education, the creative industries, publishing, communications, policy research and a very wide range of professional roles where the ability to read complex material and construct clear, rigorous arguments matters. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in English, philosophy, law, creative writing or related disciplines, using the dual foundation the degree provides as the basis for more specialist academic or professional development.
