About this course

English and Creative Writing is a combination that develops two mutually reinforcing skills: the ability to read and interpret literature with analytical precision and the craft of producing original creative work. English literature trains you to engage closely with texts across the full range of the literary tradition, from the earliest written records through to contemporary fiction, poetry, and prose, understanding how language creates meaning and how literature reflects and shapes the social and cultural contexts in which it is produced. Creative writing extends that literary understanding into practice, developing your own voice across a range of genres and learning the technical skills that make writing compelling. At the University of Plymouth, this three-year, full-time programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, as well as work placement opportunities. You will engage with some of the earliest texts that underpin Western literature, tracing the historical development of literary forms and the ways in which texts in different periods relate to one another. Alongside this historical perspective, you will develop your creative practice through sustained work in poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and other forms, learning from both the literary tradition and the feedback of your tutors and peers. The year abroad and sandwich year give you the international and professional experience that enriches both your reading and your writing, while placements connect your academic development to professional contexts in publishing, media, education, or creative industries. Graduates of English and Creative Writing work in publishing, journalism, education, media, communications, copywriting, arts administration, and as practising writers across all genres. The combination of analytical and creative skills the degree develops is broadly valued across the economy, and many graduates build portfolio careers that combine creative practice with professional employment. Postgraduate study in creative writing, English literature, or education is a natural next step for those seeking specialist expertise or academic careers.
