BA English (with Foundation Year)
About this course
English as an academic discipline is the close study of literature, language, and the wide range of texts that human beings have produced across time and culture. It asks you to read attentively, think critically about how meaning is made, and develop a voice of your own through analytical writing and debate. Far from being simply a study of the past, English engages with questions of identity, power, ethics, and imagination that are alive in contemporary culture as much as in the canonical texts of earlier centuries. It is a discipline that develops flexible, critical minds, and its skills are valued in an enormous range of professional contexts. At the University of Northampton, this programme begins with a foundation year before moving into the main degree, making it accessible to students who would benefit from additional academic preparation before engaging with degree-level study. The foundation year gives you the chance to develop your skills in close reading, academic writing, and critical thinking, building confidence and intellectual habits that will support you throughout the rest of the degree. In the years that follow, you will study a broad range of literary periods, genres, and traditions, engaging with poetry, prose, drama, and other forms through the lenses of literary history, theory, and criticism. You will also develop your own approach to literary analysis and learn to write with clarity, precision, and argument. English graduates go on to careers in publishing, journalism, education, media, public relations, communications, marketing, the civil service, and the arts. The skills of reading, analysis, and writing that the degree develops are transferable across a remarkably wide range of professions. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in English literature, creative writing, cultural studies, or related fields, and some go on to careers in teaching or academic research.
