BSc Economics and Data Science
About this course
Economics and data science is a degree that combines rigorous economic analysis with the methodological tools of modern data science, recognising that the most important economic questions today require both theoretical clarity and the ability to work with large, complex datasets. Economics provides the conceptual frameworks for understanding how markets, incentives and institutions shape human behaviour and social outcomes. Data science supplies the statistical, computational and machine learning methods needed to test economic theories, analyse policy interventions and extract patterns from the vast amounts of economic and social data now available. At the London School of Economics this three-year, full-time programme is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of economic principles, advanced data science methodologies, and the synergy between these two disciplines in addressing real-world problems. You will study microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and economic theory alongside programming, statistical modelling, machine learning and data visualisation, developing the ability to move between the formal reasoning of economics and the empirical tools of data science. LSE's social science orientation means you will apply these tools to questions in economics, finance and broader social domains. The programme includes a year abroad, extending your studies internationally. Learning within one of the world's premier economics and social science institutions provides unmatched intellectual and professional context. Graduates of economics and data science programmes are exceptionally well placed for careers in financial services, economic and policy research, consultancy, technology companies, central banking, international organisations, government economic departments and the growing field of data-driven business analytics. The combination of economic rigour and data science capability from LSE is among the most sought-after in the graduate labour market. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in economics, data science, financial economics or statistics.
