About this course

Data science is the discipline concerned with extracting knowledge and insight from large and complex datasets, using mathematical methods, statistical analysis, machine learning, and computational tools. It has become one of the defining skills of the modern economy, because almost every significant organisation now generates and depends on data, and the ability to work rigorously with that data, to find patterns, build models, and communicate findings, has become a premium competency. Data scientists work across virtually every sector, from healthcare and finance to retail, government, and technology. At the University of Leeds, you will develop the creativity and scientific tools to disentangle complex datasets and provide data solutions to the biggest real-world challenges that industries face globally. You will study statistical modelling, machine learning, programming, data visualisation, and the mathematical foundations that underpin these methods, alongside the domain knowledge and communication skills needed to translate data insights into decisions. The programme runs over three years full-time and includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience within the degree. Graduates of data science programmes are among the most in-demand in the graduate market, with strong opportunities across technology, finance, healthcare, government, retail, and consulting. Career roles include data scientist, machine learning engineer, data analyst, business intelligence analyst, and quantitative analyst. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate research in data science, artificial intelligence, or statistics, or to industry roles where the combination of computational and analytical depth is directly applicable to real organisational challenges.
