BA Economics and Business Law
About this course
Economics and business law is a combination that addresses two dimensions of how commercial life is organised and governed. Economics provides the analytical tools to understand how markets function, how decisions by firms and governments affect welfare and distribution, and how financial and monetary systems shape economic outcomes. Business law examines the legal frameworks within which commercial activity takes place, covering contract, company, employment, competition, and commercial law, and developing your capacity to reason about legal obligations and rights in business contexts. At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme with a year abroad responds to the sustained importance of economics in understanding global challenges, from banking and interest rates to taxation and government spending, and combines this with a rigorous legal education in business law. You will develop both the quantitative analytical skills of economics and the close legal reasoning skills of law, building a combination of competencies that is particularly relevant to careers at the interface of commerce and regulation. The programme leads to a BA with honours. Graduates of economics and business law programmes pursue careers in law firms, financial services, economic consultancy, the civil service, regulatory bodies, commerce, and international organisations. The dual competency the degree provides, analytical rigour in economics and knowledge of commercial law, is valued by employers who need professionals who can navigate both the technical and legal dimensions of commercial decisions. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate legal study or pursue professional qualifications in law, accountancy, or economics.
