BA Business Law
About this course
Business law sits at the intersection of legal study and commercial life, examining the legal frameworks within which businesses operate and the rules that govern contracts, company formation, employment, intellectual property, competition and commercial transactions. It is a discipline that requires both rigorous legal analysis and an understanding of the economic and commercial context in which the law is applied. Lawyers who work in business settings must understand not just the rules but also the commercial imperatives that drive their clients' decisions. At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time programme is taught within Stirling's Scottish law tradition and includes a year abroad at a partner institution, providing an international perspective on legal systems and business environments. You will study the foundations of Scots and UK law alongside commercial and company law, employment law, contract and obligations, intellectual property, competition law and the international dimensions of business regulation. The four-year structure gives time for legal doctrine to be mastered and for commercial context to be developed alongside it. The year abroad adds comparative legal awareness and cultural adaptability that are particularly valuable in an increasingly globalised business environment. Graduates are well placed for entry into professional legal training in Scotland, following the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice, or in England and Wales via the relevant professional qualification routes. Commercial solicitors, in-house legal teams in large corporations, financial and regulatory bodies, government legal services and international commercial arbitration all provide career routes. The business-focused orientation of the degree is particularly relevant for those who wish to work in corporate law, finance, mergers and acquisitions or intellectual property. Postgraduate study in law, international business law or legal practice is also a natural next step.
