BSc Diagnostic Radiography
About this course
Diagnostic radiography is one of the most technically sophisticated and clinically important of the allied health professions. Radiographers produce the medical images, using X-ray, computed tomography, fluoroscopy and other modalities, that allow clinicians to diagnose conditions, monitor disease progression and guide treatment. The work requires both technical mastery and patient-centred care, as imaging takes place across a huge range of clinical contexts, from emergency trauma care to cancer staging to paediatric investigation. At Bradford, this three-year full-time programme integrates theory with clinical placements throughout the degree, ensuring that academic learning and professional development happen in parallel rather than in sequence. This integration is widely recognised as the most effective approach to training in clinical professions, and the programme is designed so that each placement builds on and reinforces the academic content you have studied. You will develop your understanding of radiographic principles, anatomy, pathology, image interpretation, radiation protection and the physics of imaging systems, alongside the patient communication and professional skills that characterise safe and effective radiographic practice. Bradford's clinical placement network gives you exposure to a range of hospital settings and imaging environments across the region, developing your adaptability and broadening your clinical experience beyond any single department or trust. On graduating and achieving HCPC registration, you will be qualified to work as a diagnostic radiographer in NHS hospitals, private hospitals and specialist imaging centres. Many radiographers develop expertise in specific modalities or clinical areas, and advanced practice roles in image reporting, extended scope practice and specialist imaging are well-established career pathways. Postgraduate study in a specialist area is an option for those who want to develop their clinical expertise further.
