BA Danish and German
About this course
Danish and German may seem like an unusual pairing, but the combination has genuine intellectual coherence. Both are North Germanic and West Germanic languages respectively, descended from ancient common roots, and studying them together allows you to observe how languages that share an ancestor have diverged over centuries into distinct linguistic systems with their own literatures, cultures, and social histories. Denmark and the German-speaking countries, meanwhile, are significant neighbours in Northern and Central Europe, with interconnected histories and contemporary partnerships across trade, culture, and politics. At University College London this four-year joint honours programme is split equally between Danish and German throughout. You will study language skills in both, including speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation, alongside cultural topics drawn from the literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics of the countries where these languages are spoken. The wide range of modules available allows you to tailor the degree to your own interests, emphasising the cultural, historical, or linguistic dimensions that engage you most. The third year is spent abroad, divided between a Danish-speaking and a German-speaking country, providing immersive experience in both linguistic and cultural environments that cannot be replicated in the classroom. Studying two languages to degree level develops exceptional close reading, analytical, and communication skills, as well as a cultural awareness and adaptability that employers across many sectors value. Graduates move into careers in translation and interpreting, international business, journalism, the cultural sector, diplomacy, education, and roles in the European institutions and Scandinavian or German companies operating internationally. Many continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, translation, or Scandinavian or German studies.
