About this course

Counselling and psychotherapy are disciplines rooted in the belief that people can change, grow and recover, and that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is central to that process. Professional counsellors help individuals navigate a wide range of difficulties, from bereavement and depression to relationship breakdown and trauma, working to create the conditions in which clients can explore their experience and find their own paths forward. The training required to practise ethically and effectively is substantial, combining theoretical knowledge with extensive supervised clinical experience and deep personal reflection. At the University of Salford this three-year, full-time programme trains you in the principles and practice of counselling and psychotherapy at a professional level. You will study the major theoretical frameworks that underpin therapeutic work, including person-centred, psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioural approaches, developing the understanding needed to work with different clients and settings. Equally important is the personal development strand of the programme, which asks you to reflect seriously on your own experiences, values and ways of relating, because effective counselling depends on self-awareness as much as technique. You will also complete supervised client work throughout the programme, building practical skills in a real therapeutic context while receiving the support and guidance needed to develop as a practitioner. Graduates of professional counselling programmes work in a broad range of settings, including NHS primary care and mental health services, employee assistance programmes, schools and universities, charities and voluntary sector organisations, and independent private practice. The qualification also provides a foundation for further study and specialisation, whether that means a postgraduate qualification in a particular therapeutic approach, a move into supervision or training, or academic research in counselling and psychotherapy. The work is demanding but meaningful, and graduates are entering a field where trained professionals are consistently in demand.
