BA Contemporary Craft and Musical Theatre
About this course
Combining contemporary craft with musical theatre brings together two creative disciplines that each place great value on skill, presence and the ability to move an audience, whether through an object made by hand or a performance that fills a stage. Contemporary craft is rooted in the tradition of making, yet it looks forward, exploring new materials, processes and ideas to produce work that is both functional and expressive. Musical theatre is a form of storytelling that fuses song, dance and drama, requiring technical versatility and the confidence to inhabit a character fully. You will develop practical expertise in both fields across this three-year programme. In the craft strand, you will work with hands-on design and making processes, building skills in your chosen materials and learning how to develop ideas from concept through to finished piece. The aim is to help you find your own creative voice within a supportive community of emerging makers and designers. In the musical theatre strand, you will train in performance, vocal technique and movement, and explore a repertoire that spans classic and contemporary work. This combined degree also includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial experience outside the classroom and the opportunity to see both industries operating at a professional level. Graduates of a combined programme like this move into diverse roles across the creative sector. Career paths include professional performance in musical theatre, craft practice as an independent maker or studio artist, arts education, community arts work, arts administration and production. The entrepreneurial and design skills developed through the craft strand are particularly valued in contexts where creativity and self-direction are essential, from running your own studio to working in design, retail and the heritage sector.
