BA Childhood & Youth and Contemporary Craft
About this course
Childhood and youth studies combined with contemporary craft offers an unusual and genuinely interdisciplinary degree that brings together critical social science with creative practice. Childhood and youth studies is a multidisciplinary field that examines the issues and challenges facing children and young people in the UK and globally, drawing on sociology, politics, history, social policy, and cultural studies to understand how childhood is constructed, how young people develop, and how institutions and communities can better support them. Contemporary craft engages with making and material practice as a mode of inquiry and expression, examining how the making of objects connects to meaning, identity, and cultural tradition. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time degree develops your understanding of children and young people's social contexts alongside your creative practice in craft, enabling you to explore the connections between making, learning, and wellbeing. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement opportunities are built in, giving you substantial professional and international experience. The typical entry tariff is 120 points. Graduates from this combination pursue careers in education, youth work, community arts, social care, children's services, and the creative sector. The craft dimension adds particular value in art therapy, occupational therapy, educational settings using creative approaches, and the growing field of making-based community practice. The social science grounding prepares graduates for policy and research roles as well as direct work with children and families. Postgraduate study in education, social work, art therapy, or cultural studies is a natural continuation.
